Canyon State Electric Named Subcontractor of the Year by Arizona Subcontractor Association of Arizona, Receives Safety Recognition

Phoenix, AZ, June 2, 2023 – Electrical contractor Canyon State Electric (CSE) has been named American Subcontractors Association of Arizona’s (ASA) subcontractor of the year for 2023. The Phoenix-based company was honored during ASA’s “Renewing the Future” awards gala last week.

“It means the world to Canyon State Electric to be given this award,” said Robert Hughes, CSE president. “One of our core values is innovation. We aim to be a driving force for our industry, and this shows we’re on the right track.”

Award winners were decided by a committee of ASA board members and a general contractor partner.

Josh Umar, ASA’s executive director, said, “Canyon State Electric is one of the largest women-owned businesses in Phoenix and has been doing top-quality work for more than four decades. They joined ASA’s member partner program with the Arizona Department of Occupational Safety & Health (ADOSH), and their leadership serves with distinction on our board and committees. We couldn’t be prouder of the work they do or the role they play in making ASA great.”

Canyon State Electric was also honored with the Excellence in Safety award during the ceremony.

“CSE distinguished itself by ramping up their excellent University of Canyon State Electric training program, as well as becoming industry leaders in the realm of employee mental health and wellness,” said Umar.

Sidney Hawkins, Canyon State Electric’s safety & training manager, manages a partnership with ADOSH to earn Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) status and began including mental health awareness into standard education for CSE employees and industry partners last year.

“Mental health is a key element of the safety culture at CSE. For us, it’s just as important as physical health,” said Hawkins. “The Excellence in Safety award speaks volumes to our programs. To receive this honor among so many safety-rich cultures, industry leaders, and friends only encourages us to be even better at safety for our company and the construction field as a whole.”

“The ASA of Arizona is constantly looking out for each subcontractor through advocacy, safety, workforce development, and continuing education. We look forward to our involvement with ASA for years to come,” said Hughes.
