Construction Trailblazers Event Raises Thousands for Mental Health

Phoenix, AZ, December 1 – Over fifty construction professionals took to the trails late last month to network and raise money for mental health. The third annual Construction Trailblazers outing saw industry partners exploring the Bradshaw Mountains in UTVs during an event benefiting the 4×5 Suicide Prevention Program (4×5). The group raised over $3,000, which will contribute to Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certification classes and mental health awareness.

Canyon State Electric (CSE) and Pueblo Mechanical hosted the event at Arizona Outdoor Fun Adventures & Tours.

“We love giving back to our clients every year with something a bit outside the normal business development activities like golf and bowling,” said Brian Scherer, Director of Business Development at Pueblo Mechanical. “We know they’ll always rally around a great cause, that’s why we chose the 4×5 to be our financial beneficiary.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, construction workers die by suicide at a rate four times higher than the national average. Suicide is also five times more deadly than OSHA’s ‘fatal four.’

“It’s a problem that hits so close to home,” said Krista Dossey, Canyon State Electric’s Business Development Manager. “These are people we work with every day. We want them to live long, happy, healthy lives.”

“We wear PPE on every job site, but workers aren’t equipped to protect their minds,” said Vince DiGuglielmo, 4×5 board member. “With help from partners like CSE and Pueblo Mechanical, we can train more workers to support each other and end suicide in our industry once and for all.”

Canyon State Electric has partnered with 4×5 since the program launched in 2023, certifying dozens of workers as Mental Health First Aiders. According to 4×5, each Mental Health First Aider has on average, three conversations yearly with individuals experiencing mental health crises. These conversations often lead to follow-ups with behavioral health specialists who professionally address issues.

“We do everything we can to promote health and wellness for our employees and their families. 4×5’s initiatives reflect our vision of a well-balanced lifestyle within Canyon State Electric and the industry,” said Canyon State Electric CEO Stephanie Maderazzo-Hughes.

The Construction Trailblazers’s event was made possible by key industry sponsors, including Fleming West, Kovach, PG Concrete Cutting, and RC Lurie.
